The Interiorista: Tiny but mighty

Decoration finds its way into every space and brings the confetti and the glitter that gives the magic touch to your home. Visual stimulation can present itself in many shapes and forms. What makes a space uniquely charming is nor defined by the size of the room but by its content.

Decorating an apartment or small house can seem challenging but it doesn't have to be. I think the key to finding success can be summarized in two words: functionality and impact.

Compact spaces will force you to be practical. Define clearly what specific use you want to give to the room. Also, be open to create multipurpose areas to maximize the space. Use the room planner form Pottery Barn to distribute the furniture in a smart way throughout the space.

Use colors that expand the space visually. Go for light and neutral colors as a general rule.

If you are daring and are looking for a dramatic effect, use bold colors and pattern walls.

Maximize the space vertically. Going tall will make the room feel bigger and will give you more storage space.

Exchange the heavy curtains and drapes for valances or use no window treatments at all for an airy effect. If you want to use curtains, hang them high to give your walls the illusion of length.

Use furniture that fits the space! Light and smaller pieces of furniture will make the room feel more spacious than heavy ones as a rule of thumb. However, you could utilize big furnishings as long as they are suitable for the space.

Fall in love with mirrors. Mirrors can make your room look larger. Use a focal point and angle your mirrors toward it to give the illusion of depth. Mirrors also reflect both natural and artificial light to make a room brighter. They bounce light deep into the room, making it appear larger.

Get rid of the clutter! Use baskets and boxes to organize your stuff so the room doesn't feel too full. Place your accessories strategically to add interest and personality but don't overcrowd the space.

So... there you have it! To make your home look lovely, you don't need square feet. Just have in mind the rules listed above and add a handful of personality and a pinch of boldness. The result will be spectacular!
